Planning to study in Australia in 2027? Explore accepted English tests, recognized previous study and English pathways, and understand the separate student visa requirements.

Assess My English Entry Options

By Edugate Gateway | Information checked 10 October 2026

Yes, it may be possible to study in Australia without taking IELTS. Depending on your university, course and educational background, you may meet English requirements through another accepted test, recognised previous study or an approved English pathway.

The useful question is not simply which universities “do not require IELTS”. It is which English evidence your chosen course will accept from you. A university may accept one applicant’s previous qualification while requiring another applicant to provide a test result.

This guide compares selected official university policies to help you plan a 2027 application.

Important: University admission and student visa requirements are separate. Even if a university approves an English test waiver, you may still need an approved English test for your student visa. Check the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool and the current requirements for your circumstances.

Ask Edugate to assess your English entry options. Include your intended course, qualification, institution, study dates and any English results.

What Does “Without IELTS” Actually Mean?

There are several routes to investigate:

Route What It Means for Your Application
Another accepted English test You still take a test, but use an alternative recognised for the specific course.
Recognised previous education The university assesses qualifying study or subjects against its English policy.
An approved English pathway You complete the required program and meet its progression conditions.
An individual waiver, where available The university considers a request under its published criteria.

An IELTS alternative is not an exemption from English proficiency. You still need the language skills to participate in lectures, read academic material and complete assessments.

Which Australian Universities Offer Alternatives to IELTS?

The following five universities publish routes other than IELTS. This is a comparison of selected policies, not a blanket list of “IELTS-free universities”. Requirements depend on your course, qualification, study history and intended intake.

University of Technology Sydney (UTS): Recognised Study Taught in English

UTS has English language requirements for every course. Applicants with previous English-medium education may meet the minimum requirements through qualifying secondary or tertiary study, depending on the country, qualification and other policy conditions.

UTS distinguishes between recognised qualifications and other English evidence. Some undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs have additional English requirements, so check the intended degree rather than relying on the general policy alone.

Useful next step: prepare your qualification, transcripts and any official language-of-instruction evidence for a course-specific assessment.

UNSW Sydney: Previous Study, Other Tests and Defined Waiver Criteria

UNSW recognises qualifying previous study under conditions that depend on educational background, qualification level and recency. Its policy includes requirements concerning recognised institutions and the language of instruction.

Completed qualifications, diploma-level study and incomplete study may be assessed under different rules. UNSW also accepts alternatives to IELTS and publishes separate waiver criteria, including course-specific exclusions.

Its accepted-test list includes changes for Term 1, 2027 onwards. Check the current policy for the exact test version, score, component requirements and validity period before booking a test.

Useful next step: identify the correct previous-study category and check whether it applies to your intended course and intake.

University of Sydney: Recognised Qualifications and Case-by-Case Assessment

The University of Sydney accepts specified previous qualifications, approved English tests and relevant English language programs as routes to meeting its English requirements. Undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and postgraduate research rules can differ.

For some postgraduate applicants whose previous study was completed outside the university’s listed English-speaking countries, a three-year undergraduate degree or one year of postgraduate study conducted entirely in English may be considered case by case. The published policy also includes a five-year recency condition for relevant previous study. Some study areas have additional requirements.

The university specifies which tests and versions it accepts. For example, its published policy excludes TOEFL Home Edition. Confirm the current rules for your course before relying on a test result.

Useful next step: identify your study level and intended course before requesting an assessment of your previous qualifications.

Monash University: English-Medium Education Under Defined Conditions

Monash lists several ways applicants may demonstrate English proficiency, including approved school qualifications, qualifying English-medium tertiary study and accepted tests. The relevant conditions depend on the applicant’s background and intended course.

One listed route for certain applicants involves at least half a year of full-time study, equivalent to 24 Monash credit points, at diploma level or above in an English-medium institution. This is not a universal rule for every applicant or course.

Monash also has course-specific requirements and a separate graduate research policy. Do not apply coursework conditions to a research degree without checking the relevant policy.

Useful next step: confirm that your institution, qualification and period of study meet the applicable definition.

Macquarie University: Approved Qualifications and English Evidence

Macquarie may accept recognised qualifications from specified English-speaking countries or regions, or qualifications from other countries with an approved English subject. The requirements depend on the qualification, course and required English level.

Its policy generally uses a five-year validity period for recognised qualifications, with exceptions and category-specific conditions. Macquarie also reserves the right to request an English language test from any applicant.

A letter confirming English instruction should therefore not be treated as automatic approval.

Useful next step: compare your exact qualification and grades with Macquarie’s recognised categories and the English level required by your course.

Is a Medium-of-Instruction Letter Enough?

A medium-of-instruction letter can support a previous-study assessment, but it must meet the receiving university’s policy. It does not replace every other condition or guarantee a waiver.

Before requesting one, ask the university what the document needs to confirm. Useful details include:

  • Your name and exact qualification.
  • The institution and period of study.
  • Whether teaching, assessment and examinations were in English.
  • Whether the statement applies to the qualification or the whole institution.
  • The authorised signatory and institutional contact details.

Submit the letter with your transcripts and qualification certificate through the application channel your counsellor confirms. If part of your study was in another language, disclose that clearly and request evidence that accurately reflects your records.

For students who attended an English-medium school or university in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Lebanon or another country, the assessment depends on the actual institution, qualification and course policy. Country of residence alone does not determine the result.

Can I Use PTE or TOEFL Instead of IELTS?

Some universities accept alternative English tests, but the required score, component results, test version and validity period must match the intended course.

For example, the University of Sydney lists PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT among its alternatives and specifically excludes TOEFL Home Edition. Other universities have their own accepted-test lists, which can change between intakes.

Check the provider’s current score table before booking. Do not assume that a similarly named online or non-academic test is accepted.

If you already have a result, provide the full score report and test date. If you have not taken a test, ask for confirmation of the accepted version and required scores for your shortlist first.

What If I Need an English Pathway?

Ask whether your preferred degree recognises an English preparation program and what entry and completion conditions apply. For example, the University of Sydney lists relevant programs through its Centre for English Teaching, while Monash provides information about Monash English.

Before choosing a pathway, compare the additional fee, study duration, assessment requirements and likely degree start date. Obtain written confirmation that the program is appropriate for your intended course.

An English pathway is an educational preparation option. It should not be presented as guaranteed degree admission regardless of your results.

University Admission and Student Visa English Requirements Are Separate

A university can approve your English evidence or waive its test requirement while Home Affairs still requires an approved English test for your student visa. University admission and visa evidence are separate assessments. A visa English-test exemption applies only where the relevant visa rules allow it and the applicant meets the conditions.

To check which documents you should attach, open the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool.

  1. Select your country of passport.
  2. Select your education provider or enter its CRICOS code.
  3. Choose the applicable student category, such as “none of the above” if you are applying as another student category.
  4. Display the evidence list and review whether English language evidence is requested.

Read the tool’s official disclaimer. The checklist is an indication of the evidence you may need, and Home Affairs may request additional documents. If you are applying for a package of courses, the tool instructs you to select the provider offering the principal, or final, course.

When you submit your application, check the document list provided in ImmiAccount too. If English evidence is listed, follow the instructions before submitting. Recheck the requirements close to application time because the checklist can change.

Home Affairs has specific rules for accepted English tests and exemptions. Do not assume that a test accepted for university admission will automatically be accepted for visa purposes. In particular, check the current visa rules before relying on any at-home or remotely proctored test.

Prepare an Enquiry That Can Be Assessed

Instead of asking only “Can I study without IELTS?”, send Edugate the following information:

  1. Your intended degree, study level and preferred universities.
  2. Your nationality and current country of residence.
  3. Your highest qualification, institution, campus and country of study.
  4. Your study dates, completion date and grades.
  5. The language used for teaching, assessment and examinations.
  6. Any English test results or previous English preparation.
  7. Your intended intake and approximate tuition budget.

If you have been out of education for several years, include that timeline. Recency rules can make a difference to the options available.

Edugate can help compare your background with published admission criteria and identify the evidence needed for an application. The university confirms whether your evidence meets its requirements.

Request an English entry assessment with Edugate. Write “Australia 2027 — IELTS alternatives” and include your qualification, study dates and intended course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Study in Australia Without Any English Test?

Possibly, if the university accepts qualifying previous education or another approved route. Your eligibility must be assessed for the particular course, and visa requirements remain separate.

Does an English-Medium Bachelor’s Degree Guarantee an IELTS Exemption?

No. Institution recognition, study duration, recency, evidence and course-specific conditions can affect the assessment.

Is PTE the Same as Studying Without an English Test?

No. PTE is an alternative English test. Confirm the accepted version, required scores and validity period before booking.

Can I Use a University Exemption for My Student Visa?

Not automatically. Even after the university approves a waiver, an approved English test may still be required for visa purposes unless a relevant visa exemption applies. Use the Home Affairs Document Checklist Tool, read its disclaimer and check your ImmiAccount document list.

Are These Confirmed 2027 Rules?

This guide uses selected policies checked in October 2026 to support 2027 planning. Recheck the university’s current requirements for your actual intake before applying.
