TAFE NSW to University Pathways: An International Student Guide for 2027
Can international students start at TAFE NSW and progress to a university degree? Yes, eligible students can use approved pathways. The important step is to confirm the exact starting qualification, destination degree, progression conditions and credit before enrolling.
If your goal is a bachelor’s degree, a pathway should give you a clear study plan from the beginning. This guide explains the options and the questions to ask when planning for 2027.

How does a TAFE NSW-to-university pathway work?
TAFE NSW’s international pathway page describes agreements with partner universities that offer guaranteed entry and credit transfer for eligible students. Credit varies by course, institution and grades. The listed partners are:
- University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
- University of Newcastle.
- University of Wollongong.
- Charles Sturt University.
- Australian Catholic University.
Being a listed partner does not establish a pathway for every diploma and every degree. Confirm the actual course combination and conditions.

Three routes to distinguish before applying
| Route | What you need to establish |
|---|---|
| Approved TAFE NSW-to-partner-university pathway | The named qualification, destination degree, eligibility conditions and agreed credit. |
| Individual university admission and credit assessment | Whether the university accepts your qualification and which subjects it recognises. |
| Diploma-to-degree progression within TAFE NSW | The relevant TAFE NSW degree, admission conditions and advanced standing. |
The last route leads to a TAFE NSW degree rather than a partner-university award. Make sure your comparison identifies who awards the final qualification.
For a university outside the approved pathway arrangement, do not rely on an entry guarantee. Ask that university to assess admission and credit. Your study plan should use the written assessment for your actual course rather than a general statement about diploma graduates.
A verified example: a TAFE NSW IT diploma leading to a TAFE NSW degree
TAFE NSW lists its higher education Diploma of Information Technology, HE20626, CRICOS 095516G, as a one-year course. Its international course page states that graduates can receive one year of advanced standing towards its Bachelor of Information Technology in Cyber and Network Security or Data Engineering, with progression into Year 2 upon successful completion.
This is an internal TAFE NSW degree pathway. It should not be described as automatic entry into a UTS IT degree.

For UTS, the university’s IT recognition-of-prior-learning page says TAFE NSW ICT diplomas and advanced diplomas may qualify for credit, with agreements detailed in its RPL tool. International applicants can apply for RPL when applying to UTS or no later than formal enrolment in a UTS IT course.

The practical lesson is to compare qualifications by course code and destination. Similar course titles do not prove that the same credit applies.
Will a pathway save time or money?
Compare the whole route before deciding. A lower initial tuition fee does not, by itself, establish a lower total cost.
Ask for a comparison of:
- Tuition for the complete TAFE NSW stage.
- Tuition for the university subjects remaining after confirmed credit.
- Living expenses over the full expected study period.
- Any gap between the end of the first course and the next degree intake.
- Additional course expenses, travel and health cover.
An illustrative timetable might be one year of initial study followed by two years of remaining degree study, if the university confirms that structure and the subject sequence permits it. This is a planning example, not a promise for a particular course.
Ask whether credit removes core subjects or electives, and whether prerequisites or annual subject availability affect the earliest completion date. Obtain a proposed study sequence rather than simply subtracting credit points from the degree total.
Who is a suitable pathway applicant?
A pathway is worth examining if you have a clear degree goal and want to compare direct entry with a staged route. It may also suit students who want an initial qualification before progressing further.
Start by writing a short explanation of why the first qualification belongs in your education plan. What will you learn? How does it connect with your intended degree? What is your career objective after graduation?
Next, check the academic and English requirements for both stages. TAFE NSW sets course-specific requirements, and some courses require additional evidence, such as portfolios or assessments. Check the international entry requirements and the individual course page; separately check the receiving university’s requirements.
If you can already enter your preferred degree directly, compare both routes. Consider course content, credit, total duration, location and full cost. There is no single route that is best for every student.
How do international students apply?
TAFE NSW requires an education agent for a TAFE NSW-to-university pathway, and that agent must represent both institutions. The application involves TAFE NSW and university documentation. UTS has a package-offer submission process; ACU, Newcastle and Wollongong require separate applications coordinated by the agent.
Prepare certified copies of your passport, academic records and English test results, plus additional course documents where required. Non-English records need official certified translations. Applicants already in Australia may also need visa, previous CoE and health cover records.

Before paying, read both institutions’ offers and identify the conditions, payments and progression arrangements. Admission and credit decisions belong to the institutions. Study planning should not be treated as a guarantee of employment or an immigration outcome.
Seven questions to ask before choosing your pathway
Use this checklist with your counsellor:
- What is the exact TAFE NSW qualification and course code?
- Which degree and university does it lead to?
- Is this an approved packaged pathway or an individual admission application?
- What completion, grade and English conditions apply?
- How much credit is confirmed, and which subjects remain?
- What are the realistic start dates and total study duration?
- What will the entire route cost, including living expenses?
These questions turn a general idea into a course plan you can assess. Keep written confirmation with your application records.

Frequently asked questions
Does every TAFE NSW diploma guarantee university entry?
No. Check the specific approved pathway and eligibility conditions. A general credit-transfer enquiry is a separate assessment.
How much university credit will I receive?
Use the written decision for your course and destination degree. Do not assume another student’s credit award applies to you.
Can I complete a bachelor’s degree at TAFE NSW itself?
TAFE NSW offers its own degrees and degree pathways. The IT example above illustrates this option; check the exact qualification and entry conditions.
Should I choose a pathway if I qualify for direct university entry?
Compare both options based on content, total cost, time and educational goals. Ask for a full study plan for each route.
